Implants

Why get a dental implant?

Our life spans are increasing, but sometimes our bodies can’t keep up! Therefore the need for permanent solutions for dental replacement is very important to our overall health and well being. Dentures and removable bridges become unstable with continued use. Implants provide dental replacements that are both functional and esthetically pleasing, and they can profoundly change people’s lives by returning strength and beauty to their smile.

What are dental implants?

Unlike dentures, which are removable, an implant is a permanent way to replace missing teeth. An implant is actually two parts: a cylindrical metal post that is implanted into the jaw – usually made of titanium – and the prosthesis, which is the part that replaces (and looks like) a real tooth. A dental implant is a permanent alternative to a removable or a “fixed” bridge or dentures. Dental implants involve cooperation between an oral surgeon and our office. The surgical phase of treatment is completed by your oral surgeon, and the restorative phase is completed at our office.

While a Permanent Bridge is permanently “fixed” in place, a Partial Denture (such as a”Removable Bridge”) can be taken out as necessary. When the adjacent teeth are not strong enough to support a bridge, an implant may be a necessary option.

There are two basic reasons why you may need a dental implant:

  • To “anchor” a substitute tooth root for a single tooth replacement.

  • As multiple “anchors” for either a fixed or a removable prosthesis to replace several teeth.

If you think you may need an implant, one of our dentists can perform an evaluation to determine whether or not you are a good candidate for this procedure. If you are a good candidate for an implant we will provide you with further information to help you decide if you should have a dental implant based on many factors – including biocompatibility and your systemic health. Implants are available currently in titanium and zirconia.
